LIVE

There are webcams around the world that are, unknown to their owners, broadcasting across the web. A randomized, changing selection of these cameras are displayed live with a large projection. The work examines voyeuristic tendencies, and compares the explicit to the implicit.

cut up

cut up is a contemporary adaptation of the cut-up technique, as made popular by the dadaists, and as closely associated with William S. Burroughs. cut up pulls in recent news articles about William S. Burroughs, cuts those articles up, and reassembles them to form short open poems.

Unreadability

While publishing companies are increasingly ruining their web experience by using paywalls and littering their pages with ads, companies like Instapaper and Readability are creating tools to strip away the garbage. This is clearly against the wishes of these publishers who want to create an abymsal experience for their customers. Unreadability solves this problem.

Try it for yourself by dragging the button below to your bookmarks toolbar, then navigating to any article (here's an example) and clicking the "Unreadability" button in your toolbar.

PSA (Pornographic Service Announcement)

When the viewer approaches the silent, black-and-white video projection, they are unaware of what they are watching. Parts are reminiscent of a 1950s-era public service announcement, but they gradually become aware that this is indeed a montage of the introductions to various pornographic films. The similarities in gender identity become apparent, with the male role seen as a plumber, a mechanic, or similar, and the female role helpless and passive.

Untitled (Dual Channel Projection)

On one of the video projection channels, a timelapse of a picturesque sunset filmed from the Calgary Tower. On the other, a drive through the neighbourhood at the base of the tower. Each is projected from opposite sides onto a thin fabric screen hung midway between the projectors, making obvious the juxtaposition of wealth, and the lack thereof. A collaboration with Mallory Augustyn, John Nanasca, and Hilary Webber.

Canon

A musical canon is a repeated phrase played at offset times by different voices. This sculpture replicates that idea, but using drawing instead of music. Two arms draw in a similar, yet offset path, moving a single pen in a constant, inconsistent motion across an acrylic canvas. The speed and motion of the arms is pre-programmed using an Arduino to control the two servos.
